Dolphins cooperate with humans
In the coastal (沿海的) city of Laguna in Brazil, there is a special fishing team. It is made up of human fishers and dolphins! They work together to catch the same prey (獵物) – mullet (鯔魚(yú)).
Mauricio Cantor from Oregon State University, US, studied this partnership. As he told Science News Explores, the cooperation started more than a century ago.
“The dolphins are really good at detecting (發(fā)現) fish in the murky (渾濁的) water and herding (驅趕) them to the coast,” Cantor said. “The fishermen are really good at trapping the fish with their nets.” Once the fish are caught in the nets, dolphins can move in and get some for themselves.
Cantor’s study described how fishers and dolphins give cues (信號) to each other during fishing. When dolphins find fish, they herd them to the coast. Then they arch (拱起) their backs in front of the fishers to tell them to cast (撒) nets. Fishermen will then cast the nets right away, or they may lose the best chance. Fishermen need to be well-trained to understand the cues from dolphins, said Cantor.

Human-animal partnerships
The study found that fishers are 17 times more likely to catch fish by working with dolphins. At the same time, cooperative dolphins have 13 percent higher survival rates than other dolphins.
Human-animal partnerships have been rare (罕見(jiàn)的) throughout history. But they “give us an idea of how positive (積極的) our human interactions (互動(dòng)) can be with nature,” Cantor said.
