00:01:13
China, at the moments, has many many very good talents coming up everyday. At the moments, I think China is still in the process of discovering. … You know in architecture, and I see that a lot of Chinese architects are still looking towards western inspiration, or even perhaps Japanese inspiration, because they are historically more developed in architectural science. But China is also coming up very fast, so I would like to say that originality is happening here, but it just needs more encouragement.
00:01:50
Actually there’s no such thing as originality, everything has been created already. But as architectural, actually, designers, we should try to inspire from everyday situation or objects rather than designed work already. But my point is actually to say, as designers, we should actually look at everyday life I would like, what we do everyday, and how we see life itself should be to get inspiration, rather than just looking at buildings or designs that have been done by somebody else. I think that’s how we can be more original when you design something.
00:02:40
OK, a lot of my inspirations come from a lot of my interests. I like watching Japanese robot cartoons; I like nature a lot; I do a lot of sports myself; I like to, look, climb mountains; you know, I like to meet a lot of people; I like to travel around the world.
And all these things are more or less part of my life. So, my life is the inspiration for my work, I think it’s simply like that.
00:03:17
I think I can answer this really quickly. To me, a really creative design is wanna go, you know, when I’m surprised. Because when you are surprised, you question. And you question, you learn from this surprise. And that is really the design.
00:03:50
I think, in a way, I mean,in the reality of designing a work, we are limited by a lot of, like, rules, ok, money, clients’ needs. And all these are rules that make us have to design for a reason. In a way, I think whatever the design job you’ve had, you can always think about something creative to give your clients. I mean the challenge is to find creativity even when there’s lot of different kinds of controlling factors for the job.
00:04:42
Ok, at the moment Beijing is extremely well as a design capital. I mean, I see a lot of really creative buildings going on, and many many famous designing firms are opening for offices heads. I think Beijing has a big advantage of, one, because, it’s very big, you know there are a lot of land for buildings. And secondly the actual building regulation in Beijing is more relaxed than Hong Kong. So you can be more creative than Hong Kong, Hong Kong is much smaller.
00:05:13
Yeah, I agree with that, yeah, I do, yeah!
00:05:41
I think at the moment what Beijing needs is to promote much more its local talents from universities or from the local profession. Uh, we have to start much earlier to train designers to think more intelligently about the design. And also I think one of the things is that it’s such still a bit of promise. I see a lot of local designers, still worry too much about, be a little crazy with their designs.
00:06:42
The answer of this question… there’s no right answer. You can design based on market value, because we as the designer needs money. We need to design based on how the market will like, probably promote us. But I think as designers, we should, no, I mean, in a way, also introduce new ideas to clients, because, I think, probably like, you know, clients, because design is an introduction to how people accept it. Sometimes our job is also to introduce new ideas to clients themselves, I think. But it is much easier to realize it that we should consider what the markets trend is, but also at the same time, try to be innovating a new market trend. I think that’s what a more successful creative designer will be in the future.
00:07:55
Well, I mean, we wake up every morning, go to work, come back home, cook, eat, watch TV. Our life is very boring, I’m sorry to say. But as designers we should actually make that lifestyle a little bit more interesting. What I mean is that we can design, say, a clock that looks like a sculpture, when you leave the house in the morning, when you come back, it becomes another sculpture. So you can back a little bit that bored. And in many ways I think, that’s our jobs as designers. And also as architects, we also should create buildings that make people look at a city in a different way. That’s, what, I think, a good architect should do.
00:09:10
If we talk about the art, design and market triangle, it is just quite common. We have to make marketing the least important, because in order to be truly creative, our answer is, if you truly want to create something original, marketing has to be less considered. Because when you introduce a new concept, you can’t (make a) completely new concept, you can’t look at the market value that much because it’s already been done in that words. So if you want to be an artist and creative, first ignore marketing, think about what you want to do.
00:10:06
My company, uh, we have pretty much too rules. Ok, one rule is that we only approach clients who like modern architecture. This is absolutely no change for us because, I think, to be specializing in modern architecture, it makes much better at doing a specific job. If you do too many different things, you distract in a way.
Let’s give an example. For example, if you are going to buy a Ferrari, you’ll gonna buy a race car. There’s nothing else they make but race car. And they are really good at it because they only make one kind of car. That’s the reason why I want to tell you.
And another thing I always tell my workers and actually even my students is that: I try to tell them not to look at too many magazines when they come up with the design solution. Because the more you look at design magazines or what is really good right now, the less you’ll try to use your brain to think of something original unless it becomes a problem.
Sometimes I’ll tell my students or my boys to go out to the mountain, go to the beach, you know, and they come back and list ten objects they see, they really like. And I want them from those ten objects, design something for me.
00:11:37
I, I’ve been, my furniture have already on sale in Beijing. I have, I have not yet done any architectural work yet. But my interior design work as I already got new clients. And I think in Beijing there are many clients who really like creative design work, to the point, even more than Hong Kong. But uh, I think, it’s just, that’s still a huge market, actually I don’t know Beijing that well. Because even though I’ve been in Beijing for 2 years, I always go back to HK. So I think my company is still trying to explore a very creative market here, which is going to be, I think, a great thing for China in the future.
00:12:42
European or…Perhaps get a lot of …we bring Japanese…because it’s pretty famous of that. Uh, Education system has a very simple philosophy. Try to invent a concept! Don’t follow anybody else, and that shows in their work. In Asia, even Hong Kong and China, it’s still inspired by other architects, but they don’t (never) tell designers to think of something new. So I think this is something china will do anyway in the future, but now I think we just need more people to promote this.
00:13:23
I should, I mean, I like all my stuffs. I’m joking.
I’m afraid I’m proud of my vertical and horizontal farm tower which I’ll show you eventually, and also my … farm project because my … farm project is my first Chinese big contract. And my clients at that moment are still working at it with me. And it was designed, that I think, we would wonder first one in the world to introduce farmers and residents to live together, because in the most countries in the world, including China, you know, rich residents and farmers should never mix. But I should want them to learn from each other in order to help each other out.
The other project I’m really proud of is one of my latest projects about vertical and horizontal farm tower. Also about farmer, because in a way I think why I bring two projects about farming into that place. Farming is actually disappearing in the rest of the world and in China. Because everybody wants to move into city to work in a job that pays more and less hard work. But there’s a new movement in the architecture right now is to bring in environmental architecture and also farming back because we need to eat. And if farmers keep on the working, there’s nothing to eat, you know. So my tower was based on the concept of actually farming inside the city. Again, there is something that I explored with many professors, to, for a concept, that has to work in the next twenty years.
00:15:26
Because I actually like nature a lot, and, well, I mean, I’m like a human being, I like to eat, I like vegetables. And I think farmers work really hard to make us have what we have, the most basic of all elements. But if they don’t do it, who’s going to do it? That’s a big issue, you know.
00:16:00
Two reasons why farming is really dying is because one, people think farming don’t pay them enough money, and second, it’s really hard work. So if you want your next generation to be farmers again, you gonna make them a little easier for them. That’s why in my vertical and horizontal tower, I propose a farming that is pretty easy because it’s done by robots, and also it’s a very high technology structure. So young kids, can, I should think, is, you know, really kind of interesting to work in this. So if we wish to put people back to farming, it’s not hard, it’s not poor, it’s actually even better than a city job, it’s kind of exercise at the same time.
00:17;16
Actually, at the moments, my company is exploring really really advanced technology. Like sustainable architecture, I know, what I mean, like solar panels, it’s actually very wasteful, because you need a huge farm to make solar found back works. And wind power is actually very big, it’s a hundred-meter tower but work with only one wind bar. That’s very old technology, and that’s what a new generational technology has to think about right now.
For example, the new idea in a sustainable technology is that, for example, in my vertical and horizontal farming again, we did solar balloons, which are balloons that are with solar-like cells inside them.
Or like, we are using a new way of solar panels that are ten times lighter than the current ones, but also much easier to absorb penal energy.
So, anyway, all these new technologies, actually all our projects at the moments always have something that is sustainable because it’s actually important that we have to make our environment better, because our buildings are getting better, the manufacturing has to get better too.
